If there is one thing that customers always find fault with when it comes to smaller BMWs, like the 1-Series and X1, it’s the lack of space, especially in the back. We also found this to be true when we tested the latest generation 1er, and the problem lies with the sporty yet cumbersome RWD setup.
So what’s BMW’s going to do? Well, they are going to launch a new car that’s expected to be called the 1-Series Gran Turismo, or 1-Series GT for shot. These latest spyshots prove it’s a front-wheel drive we’re dealing with. This will be pitted against other German rivals in the premium segment, like the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf Plus.

The platform for the 1er GT will be shared with the next MINI Cooper, a fact made abundantly clear by MW boss Norbert Reithofer, who in 2010 said: "For these new vehicles [the new BMW and MINI] we are developing a common architecture for both front and four-wheel drive."
