When you see the next-generation Range Rover being tested on the Nurburgring you know that the Brits mean business and are planning serious dynamic changes for their flagship vehicle.
To start with, the luxury SUV will be underpinned by a modified version of the Jaguar XJ's platform and is also expected to use composite materials for certain panels, with the final result being a weight reduction of up to 880 pounds (400 kg). Of course, the first benefit will be a serious increase in fuel efficiency, but the agility will also be superior.

The platform will also be used for the next generation of the Range Rover Sport, which will no longer borrow the Discovery's chassis, with the change allowing the Sport model to offer seven seats for the first time.

As you can see in the adjacent images, the Range Rover appears to be a bit longer and have a lower roof line. The wheelbase will be longer, which means that rear passengers will have even more space.

As for the engine range, this will be inherited from the current model, which means that we;ll get diesel and petrol units with outputs ranging from 260 to 510 hp. In addition to that, Land Rover will also offer a hybrid version later in the car's life cycle.

The new Range Rover, which uses the L405 internal designation, is now in the final development stages and is expect to be introduced in about a year from now, being offered as a 2013 model.
