Mercedes is currently working to develop a new generation of its flagship model, the S-Klasse, with the vehicle set to debut in 2013. Today we are giving you a set of spy photos showing the vehicle in the early development stages.

The German automotive producer is preparing important design changes for the premium saloon, which is expected to borrow certain design features from the F700 concept car that was brought to the world in 2007 at the Detroit Auto Show.

The future S-Klasse, which uses the W222 internal name, will use the company’s new MoVe powerplants - modular V6 and V8 petrol units. The information is still limited, but we can tell you that the engines will use turbochrarging and direct injection to offer a high level of efficiency. The S63 AMG will ditch the current 6.3 liter naturally aspirated unit, replacing it with a twin-turbo 5.5-liter V8. Various unnoficial sources reports that the V12 units used by the S600 and S65 AMG may be discontinued, but we cannot put our finger on it yet.

As for the oil-burners, these will start with the 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine used on the S250CDI. Mercedes will also offer two hybrid versions: the first one will use a V6 petrol unit, while the second, a mild hybrid, might come with the aforementioned diesel mill.

Of course, the new S-Klasse will also be a display of new technology, with the list of expected developments including a pair of video cameras installed in the interior rear-view mirror console. These will se used by multiple new systems, such as a city-destined cruise control system which might also control the vehicle’s steering.
