There are a lot of fast Ford fans out there, but unfortunately most of them stop at the Focus ST level or higher. The go-faster Fiesta has never managed to capture the imagination of supermini fans and aquire that huge fan base it needs. And Ford had never stuck consistently to making fast shopping trolleys like Renault has with the Clio.
But enough bickering and complaining. There’s a new Fiesta ST coming soon, following the three- and five-door hatchback concepts we’ve seen last year. We find it a bit disturbing that they took so long to bring the ST to market, since the debut should have taken place back in 2008. We’re complaining again, aren’t we?
The Fiesta ST will come with a 1.6-liter EcoBoost rated at 180 horsepower and replacing the 150 hp of the old 2.0-liter aspirated four-pot. It almost looks like the ST is still focusing on the battle with the old Polo GTI and the Clio RS, but the game has moved on significantly since those days.
The next Clio is rumored to also go turbo, developing 210 or even 220 hp, so can the Ford really be called relevant? Well its only advantage in the old days was its low selling price, so Dearborn had better not overprice this one.
We’ve dug deep and found some old AutoCar reports from last year that indicated it would undercut the Clio 200 by £1300 (€1,550).
These spy photos also reveal for the first time a sporty interior with leather on the steering wheel, hear shifter and handbrake lever. The blue dash and half leather half fabric seats are gone, making the whole thing look a bit more sober. All should be revealed later this year, when the ST hits the European market, and probably also the US.
