Spyshots: 2013 Chevrolet Colorado on European Roads

Here’s one that took a bit of figuring out! We’ve just received a nest of spyshots showing a mystery pickup truck belonging to the Chevrolet brand in Sierra Nevada, in Spain. The most likely candidate was obviously the upcoming 2013 Colorado, but a quick search revealed it’s not in the model roster for Chevrolet Europe, though some dealers might import it independently.

However, a quick check with the undisguised pictured we have from Thailand revealed this is indeed the same pickup.

In fact, Chevrolet had brought the Colorado Rally Pickup that made its debut in at the Buenos Aires International Auto Show to Frankfurt last week for a European debut.

The biggest difference between that concept and the vehicle you see in the spyshots is the body style. The Rally version actually previews the Crew Cab version with four doors, whereas this is the Extended Cab model, with seats in the back but only two doors. There might also be a Regular Cab without a second row of seats, though GM has never mentioned this.

The 2013 Colorado is also undergoing testing in Thailand right now, as it will be locally produced there. Chevrolet Colorado Chief Engineer Roberto Rempel and his testing team have lived in the country during the development, as they wanted to ensure that the 2013 Colorado meats the local market needs.

“The hard work for this program has been done, and we are incredibly pleased with the results. This is a world-class truck that will appeal to buyers not just in the heavily concentrated truck markets of Southeast Asia, but around the world,” Rempel said.

“We know customers of this type of vehicle want a workhorse and a daily-use vehicle all in one, so our product has to deliver. We have benchmarked the toughest, most flexible vehicles around the world. When you combine that approach with our detailed consideration of global expectations, we are confident the new Colorado will be a winner,” the Colorado Chief Engineer added.

The European engine range could include both the 2.5-liter and 2.8-liter diesel engines developed for the pickup. These feature overhead cams, turbocharging and durable aluminum cylinder heads for high levels of refinement and durability.

"Chevrolet has built trucks right from the start and they are an essential part of our brand. Through its purposeful design, refinement and uncompromising capability, the Colorado Rally Concept creatively reinterprets our proud heritage,"
said Wayne Brannon, President and Managing Director of Chevrolet Europe.
