Spyshots: 2012 Volkswagen Passat CC

It’s not as expensive as the Mercedes Benz CLS, nor does it have the pompous name of the Porsche Panamera. We’re talking about the Passat CC - the only four-door coupe choice for the reasonable and cheap thoughtful driver.

The regular Passat has received a big facelift, which resulted in it looking like some sort of Audi crossbreed due to all the angular lines. There’s nothing wrong with the look of the CC, though we would have liked to see a really hot version of it with over 300 horsepower like the Insignia. But Volkswagen knows best, and they decided to give four-door coupe a makeover as well.

The 2012 model year has recently been spotted testing in high-altitude regions of Europe, and it’s clear that it has adopted the new Das Auto design language at the front and rear. The styling of the Passat was criticized by many as being to conventional and unremarkable, so the CC is the perfect change for VW to prove it can color between the lines and still deliver a good-looking car.

Not surprisingly, these camouflaged testers shows a front fascia that is more akin to what we see on both the outgoing CC than the new Passat and Jetta, as the new coupe will likely feature flowing lines at the back. We can expect a slightly revised rear fascia that accompanies the changes at the front, and new wheel choices will probably be offered for the 2013 model year.

From what we can make out in the spyshots, it appears Volkswagen is testing the new CC while under load, touring up and down some steep European alpine areas. Seen here towing a heavy trailer, Volkswagen could be trialling chassis rigidity as well as driveline and engine torque for the new model.

From the looks of things, the car is almost ready, so we should see it being unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show in September.
