Audi has the bad habit of making an interesting looking car that pretends to offer exciting performance, only to make an even better version version arriving on the scene with a big V8 under the bonnet and a front fascia that looks mean enough to swallow little children. We’re talking about an ‘S’ model, of course, but this particular one is coming in a body shape we haven’t seen before from the Ingolstadt carmaker.

We are of course talking about the Audi S7 Sportback, which was recently snapped by our spy photographers while undergoing road testing. Although this is just a test mule, we can easily see those four tailpipes that distinguish it from the rest of the range. The back bumper is also a bit more aggressive, hinting at the S7’s performance orientations.

At the front, the production version of the car will have a sporty appearance, augmented by a deeper and lower front spoiler.

Details are limited at the moment, but we can expect to see various performance-oriented enhancements over the regular A7 Sportback. This will no doubt include bigger brakes lower and sportier suspension settings, sportier and larger alloy wheels and a high-output engine. Audi is sure to offer a choice of different 19- or 20-inch ally wheels in styles we’ve we’ve grown accustomed to, and the spyshots we have in our hands show a split 10-spoke wheel set.

Details regarding the engine are lacking to say the least, but some reports suggest the car will have the 4.2-liter V8 also seen in the Audi R8, while others suggest a the twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that’s currently being developed for both the A8 and Bentley’s range. We're inclined to believe the latter will be used, providing about 470 horsepower and sufficient torque for such a large car. But whichever unit Audi goes for, the power will be sent to all four wheels through the usual quattro system and a dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters.

The fact that the car was spotted almost completely uncovered hints to a possible reveal at this year’s Frankfurt Auto Show and a market arrival early next year.
