Slowly but surely, the next generation BMW 1 Series, with all its incarnations, is beginning to take shape. After seeing over the past six months more than enough spyshots showing the five door model of the 1 Series, it's time to take a quick peek at the three door version of the model.

To be released sometime next year as a 2012 model, the 1 Series pictured here might at first give the impression than it is a regular five door version of the 1.

Our reliable sources (namely those of us who can make something out from under the psychedelic camo) tell us however not to trust the rear door line, as it is nothing but a cleverly drawn door made of black tape.

The new 1 Series will come to the market with a less compact look and a more sport-oriented design. It is exactly the sporty trait that will be targeted with the engines which will be fitted onto the model as well.

The backbone of the line up will consist of two versions of a 2.0l four cylinder turbocharged engine, which will develop 204 and 238 horsepower, respectively. Smaller, but equally as vivid gasoline engines will be making it into the new 1 Series as 1.2l and 1.5l units with power outputs ranging from 70 to 184 horsepower.

The most powerful unit, to be featured on the 135i, powered by a new N55 petrol twin scroll turbo straight-six engine good for 302 hp. The German manufacturer is also said to be working on a so-called "Supersport" version of the 1 Series which will be positioned between the 135iS and the future M3.
