Opel is working hard to finalize the sporty variant of the Astra, the GSI, which will be available with both gasoline and diesel engines. While the gasoline GSI will fight the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the diesel Astra GSI will take on the Golf GTD.

The spyshots show the Astra GSI testing on the roads, with little camouflage kit covering the essential parts. Even if the entire front of the car is hidden behind a black cloth, it is easy to observe that the bumper is redesigned in a sportier and more aggressive manner. It has bigger air intakes and a closer to the ground skirt.

Another new addition to the front of the Astra GSI is represented by the daytime running lights. The profile view uncovers the low stance, a clue that the suspension is lowered and hardened for better road holding capacity.

The car surprised by the carparazzis had no camouflage gear on the sides and on the back, so this is pretty much how the real thing will look like. The back sports a larger wing over the hatch window and a redesigned bumper containing a diffuser-like element. The car also sports distanced double exhausts.

The diesel Astra GSI will be powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder bi-turbo engine, delivering 190 horsepower. This amount of power will offer the car almost similar performance as the current gasoline Astra GSI (200 horsepower, 0-62 mph in 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 143 mph).

After the GSI variants will be on sale, Opel will launch the most extreme version of the Astra family, the OPC.
