Spyshots: 2010 BMW 5 Series

One of the most awaited releases from German manufacturer BMW, the new 5 Series, is making its moves towards its entrance to the market. Here are up-close-and-personnal spyshots of the new 5er, showing the car virtually undisguised.

The new generation 5er will come with a not-so-obvious restyled look. As you can see, BMW will give the 5 Series a new interpretation of the brands trade-mark kidney grille. The new model will bring along a more conservative look, as well as a cleaner front-end design.

Unlike the current generation 5 Series, which uses an aluminum frame in the front, bonded to the steel rear end of the chassis, the new model will make use of an all steel construction. The overall length will grow by some 2 centimeters, while its height will be reduced slightly and its width increased by a fraction.

The new 5-Series will also benefit from some technical support developed for the new 7 series, including Integral Active Steering, Dynamic Drive, Dynamic Damping Control, Night Vision System, Lane Warning, and cruise control with Stop and Go function.

As for the engines to come with the next generation 5 Series, reports hint to a 2.5l straight six as an entry level choice, with the top of the range versions rumored to be the 4.8l V8. For the upcoming M version of the 5er, BMW may use the unit recently developed for the X5M and X6M, or at least a variation of it. The engine powering the SUVs is a 4.4l unit that develops 555 horsepower and 680 Nm, making it able to reach 60 mph (100 km/hour) in 4.7 seconds. The top speed of the X5 M and X6 M is 250 km/hour (155 mph).
