Sprint Car Flagman Narrowly Avoids Terrifying Crash

There’s no denying how dangerous Sprint Car racing can be, and that’s not even including the numerous examples that Tony Stewart has provided over the last year. Earlier in the month, flagman Keith Trusso found out firsthand just how unpredictable the cars in this racing series can act during a scary incident at the Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, CA.

One lap after a restart, an accident in the middle of the field causes one car to check up, but he is rear ended by another car, driven by Scott Hall, whose car is then catapulted into the air where it slams into the flag stand. Trusso has a split second to duck away from the impact, but the steel and concrete structure definitely did its job. The before and after portion of the video showed that the only significant damage to the flag stand was some steel mesh being ripped away.

Without even thinking, Trusso throws the red flag and then heads down to check on the driver who quickly emerged from his car uninjured. After the incident, Trusso climbs back into the flag stand and picks his pack of cigarettes up off the floor. We can’t blame him for enjoying a smoke after a near miss like that.

Sprint Car racing has been in the news a lot lately due to the recent incidents involving NASCAR Sprint Cup series veteran Tony Stewart. In 2013, he was in a violent multi-car crash that resulted in a severe leg injury to Steward, and almost exactly a year later, his car struck fellow racer Kevin Ward Jr., who had gotten out of his racecar following a crash, and later pronounced dead due to blunt trauma..

As far as this crash goes, nobody was injured in the accident, and it was the flag man Trusso who uploaded this video.
