We’ve already taken the time to explain why a used Toyota MR2 Spyder might be an excellent deal for anyone looking to secure a sports car without breaking the bank. But let us showcase the perfect example for what we had in mind when using the words mid-engine, low budget, and open-top thrills in a single sentence.
Born as a third-generation in 1999, the MR2 became known as the MR2 Spyder in America, signaling the Japanese automaker’s new approach of making the lightweight sports car a convertible. Also known as the “Midship Runabout-Sports,” the MR2 series had been providing mid-engine thrills without charging an arm and a leg from the owner long before GM had the C8 Chevy Corvette dream.

Fortunately, the latter became a reality, but this time around, we’re going to discuss something that may end up on someone’s driveway for around $50k less than a $60,995 Stingray Coupe. It’s a 2001 Toyota MR2 Spyder that’s currently up for grabs at a Bring a Trailer auction for anyone willing to outdo the current highest bid of just $10,250.

Granted, one needs to quickly consider if they’re willing to part ways with around $11k because this little Japanese sports car will become someone’s new ride in less than five hours at the time of writing. And there are several reasons to act soon. For starters, just look at the funny white face and marvel how a 20-year-old car remained in such a pristine condition.

Better yet, the Super White paint job is elegantly contrasted by the Tan soft top and cream leather interior. And do we need to mention those sparkly-clean 15-inch alloy wheels to get you all hooked up? Of course, there are other highlights as well.

We could easily discuss how the 1.8-liter inline-four engine casually mixes with the five-speed stick shift to deliver 138 horsepower (sure, not a big pony count, but who cares, really?) to the rear wheels.

There are even some creature comforts like the air conditioning and power accessories, but in the end, it’s more important for this Toyota to note the clean New York title and less than 61,000 miles (98,000 km) it has traveled during its lifetime.
