If you’ve used music streaming services, you probably know already that most of them can already generate custom playlists based on the songs you previously listening to and liked.
This is something that comes in really handy not only because this way you don’t have to add all songs you like to a playlist but also because it helps with music discovery, making it easier to find tunes you might enjoy but you didn’t know they existed.
And now Spotify wants to push things a little further with a new technology that would rely on artificial intelligence to guess the next song you want to listen to and generate a dedicated playlist in this regard.
So theoretically, Spotify wants the user to manually select a song to play and then let the miracle of technology decide what to listen to next.
“Methods, systems and computer program products for periodically generating a personalized playlist of media objects based on a most recent taste profile of a user. An N-dimensional latent factor vector that defines a taste profile of a user is constructed and matched to an M-dimensional latent factor vector that defines attributes of a media object. A playlist including the first media object is generated based on the matching,” Spotify explains.
This new system isn’t entirely different from how the whole thing works right now, but on the other hand, it’s very clear Spotify wants to rely more on artificial intelligence and make everything more convenient for users.
My guess is Spotify’s long-term goal here is also to improve music discovery, as the company wants music from new artists to be promoted in a more effective way on its subscriber base.
For the time being, however, this is all just a patent, and it remains to be seen how Spotify decides to improve its system to automatically generate playlists in the coming future.
