Back in 2013, specialist Porsche tuner speedART announced it was filing for insolvency, together with 9ff. However, they seem to have made a comeback, a big one at that.
At a recent Porsche meet and greet event near Stuttgart, this thing made its appearance. It's the platypus of luxury SUVs, the zebroid that should never have been built.
We did a bit of digging and found the "SP-390M" letters on the back refer to a tuning package for the Macan S model. The V6 gasoline engine of this car normally produces 340 horsepower. However, that has grown to 390 PS, while torque has gone up from 460 to 430 Nm. All in the name of keeping up with the hot hatchbacks.
Speaking of which, the Macan now resembles one. Being much lower and rakish than the Q5 it's based on, Porsche's baby SUV was always a little dorky. However, this speedART is a twin sister of the GLA 45 from the AMG people. Even the graphics remind us of the Edition 1 that came out several years ago.
Obviously, they changed a lot more than just the engine. For example, the suspension has been replaced with custom KW coilovers, while the wheels are 22-inch Radsatz Typ SP9-SUV wrapped in 295/30 rubber.
German magazine AutoBild played with the SP-390M and in the July 2016 print issue, they will say it reaches 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds, followed by 200 km/h in 19.5 seconds. That's pretty good, but if it's speed you want, you'd be better off with a GLA 45 AMG.
As you can hear for your yourselves, the SP-390 features an air diffuser at the rear which is flanked by four really sonorous exhaust pipes. Weirdly, there's also a diffuser at the front. That's not how aero packages work!
The interior has suffered some changes too. We say "suffer" because this German tuning pack falls short of that offered by the Russians at TopCar. But you didn't need to read this story just to find that out. To wash away some of the bad aftertastes, we'll quickly mention the Macan Turbo can be optimized to 450 horsepower and that speedART have also customized the 911.
