Spanish Prostitutes to Wear Reflective Vests... Or Else

Prostitutes seem to be dangerous not only in terms of health, but also to moving traffic. This is why, for both their and drivers’ safety, prostitutes working on the street outside a town northern Spain have been demanded to wear high-visibility vests, in order to reduce the risk of accident.

As far as we know, this will also help boost their business, as the reflective vests will also make them ore visible to potential customers.

Officials in Els Alamus, near Barcelona, Spain, are very strict: the prostitutes either wear the fluorescent vests or face a fine, the Telegraph reports. Specifically, the ladies that do not obey the law will be fined EUR40 ($56) if spotted not wearing the safety gear... and we are not talking about condoms...

The prostitutes are in breach of a law introduced in 2004, which is aimed at protecting types of workers who spend their time at the roadside.

"In the past couple of months the prostitutes have been fined for two reasons: for not wearing the reflective jacket and for creating danger on the public highway,"
a spokesman for the regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source.

The move follows recent legislation introduced by local authorities to ban prostitutes from offering sex for sale in public urban areas. Mayor Josep Maria Bea has been accused of mounting a campaign to drive the sex workers out of the area.

Prostitution is not illegal in Spain, but profiting from the sale of sex by another is. A recent survey found one in four Spanish men admitted to having paid for sex.
