Space Shuttle Made of Humans at Kennedy Space Center

Decades of space exploration using perhaps human kind's most exciting vehicle ever, the space shuttle, will end this year, as soon as the remaining two crafts (Endeavour and Atlantis) land for the last time in the months to follow. The legacy and memories the three shuttles will leave behind are, however, hard to describe in words.

As with any other man-made machine, the space shuttle has behind it a huge crowd of people that have made it possible. Most of them will never be acknowledged for the contribution to the success of the program.

Discovery, the first of the three shuttles to be retired, is currently getting in shape to be shipped to the Smithsonian. As a tribute to it, and to the people that have made all those take-offs and landings possible, the employees of the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, have decided last week to get together and form, using their bodies, the iconic shape of the shuttle. Set up in front of the NASA Vehicle Assembly Building, the huge choreography is a testimony of the success of the shuttle program.

"The unique photo opportunity was designed to honor the space shuttle program's 30-year legacy and the people who contribute to safely processing, launching and landing the vehicle,"
NASA said in a release.

From 2012, NASA has no plans to launch another manned mission into space for quite some time. All the resources of the agency will be directed towards returning to the Moon with a manned space craft by 2020 and even sending crews of astronauts to Mars and even an asteroid by 2025.
