Cats and dogs in households across America shivered this Thursday at the news there’s a new puppy in town: the Sony aibo.

Introduced in 1999 as a robotic companion for those wanting a pet but without the responsibilities, the current generation of the aibo will be released in the United States as a limited, all-in-one bundle that includes the pup itself, a three-year AI Cloud Plan, an assortment of aibo toys, and an individually numbered commemorative dog tag.

The bundle will sell in the States for $2,899 as the First Litter Edition, with the packages expected to arrive just in time for the holiday season.

"This is truly a one-of-a-kind product designed to connect with its owners on an emotional level," said in a statement Mike Fasulo, Sony North America COO.

"aibo's charming personality, dog-like behaviors and ability to intelligently interact with family members, help to create a personal bond. Bringing aibo back to the U.S. reflects Sony's broader commitment to provide consumers with products that not only entertain them but also enrich their lives."

Despite its adorable looks, aibo is a robot, so it might not be appropriate for those already manifesting opposition to machines or fearful of spying eyes all over. Aibo is packed with sensors, cameras, and actuators, being capable of moving along a total of 22 axes.

The robot can learn thanks to the AI that powers it. It can also enhance its reactions based on past experiences that are stored in a cloud.

Sony says the AI is so good it can develop a relationship with the humans around it, and its personality is shaped by the way in which it is raised and the experiences it goes through. Simply put, no two aibos are or behave the same.

Starting August 24 and until October 14, the aibo can be seen at Sony Square NYC, the only place it will be on display before the sales start.
