Over the course of 13 years, one of the American music scene’s most iconic duo has sold in excess of 40 million records. Sonny & Cher were as hot as the pop scene got in the 1960s. The sixties is also the decade of the pony car, personified by the Ford Mustang.
Similarly to Sonny & Cher, the Ford Mustang was in with the in crowd. More than one million units were built in the first eighteen months since the start of production, propelling the Mustang into annals of automotive history and cult stardom. As fate would have it, the Ford Motor Company and Sonny & Cher crossed paths, as in two convertible Mustangs were customized by George Barris’ crew for appearing in Sonny & Cher’s only feature-length movie.
Created exclusively for publicity purposes, Sonny’s Mustang was finished in Murano Gold Pearl and dark brown side panels. Cher’s pony car, on the other hand, is even more blingy. Pink paint job, deep red side panels with fade-away effect, Ermine fur, Scottish leather upholstery, and pink suede, what more could Cher wish for? Extremely thick Mouton fur carpeting? Double check!
The celebrated duo’s Mustangs were sold off by RM Auctions for $198,000 back in 2009, which works out at $99,000 a pop. Seven years later, Sonny & Cher’s custom Ford Mustangs prepare to be sold once again, this time around by Barrett-Jackson. This lot’s fine print reads “sold as a pair,” which means that whoever bids the most will go home with not one, but two Mustangs.
Currently part of the Tammy Allen Collection, the focal points of this story come with an extensive collection of Sonny & Cher memorabilia. Based on the 1966 Ford Mustang with the 289 cu.in. V8 engine connected to the 3-speed automatic transmission, these cars aren’t fast. But then again, Sonny & Cher’s Mustangs hark back to an era when the streets were alive with the sound of feel-good music, love was unconditional, and V8s were the convention.
