Barrett-Jackson, one of the major American car auction houses, concluded its first major online auction at the end of last week. After the numbers were punched in, the organization concluded this way of doing business is probably as lucrative as the in-person events it is used to.
Among the many vehicles being sold this month online was Dale Earnhardt No. 3 Chevrolet. It was put on the block by Richard Childress, and the goal was to have all the money gained from the car’s sale donated to support the fight in the current health crisis. According to Barrett-Jackson, the Chevy wearing the number 3 on its sides went for $425,000 to a bidder who wishes to remain anonymous.

“I have so many memories of this No. 3 Chevrolet, including celebrating with Dale Earnhardt in Victory Lane. I will always hold those memories dearly, but now I am thrilled to see that the winning bidder will be able to build memories as well,”
said in a statement Richard Childress, the head of the Richard Childress Racing team for which Earnhardt drove during his NASCAR career.

Earnhardt drove this particular Chevy during several NASCAR races on tracks in Bristol, Dover, Rockingham, and Darlington between 1996 and 1999. The car has only one race win to its name, at Rockingham Speedway in 1996, but it never finished worse than fourth.

Earnhardt is considered one of the biggest names in NASCAR. During his career, he won a total of 76 Winston Cup races, including the Daytona 500 in 1998. A total of seven NASCAR championship went to him. Earnhardt died in 2001 after a crash at the Daytona 500 race.

Separately, Childress is also selling off a memorabilia collection. In it, we can also find pre-production models of diecasts, some that never made it into series production. This time, the chosen medium for the sale is eBay.
