While Android 10 comes with so many cool new features, it also seems to bring quite a headache to drivers who use their smartphones to power Android Auto in their cars.
Some complain that Android Auto is broken after they update their devices to Android 10, and according to someone on Google’s forums, carmakers are already aware of the issue.
A 2019 Chevrolet owner explains on the forums that they upgraded their Samsung Galaxy S9 to Android 10, only to discover that Android Auto no longer worked when the whole thing was complete.
At first, it all seemed to be caused by a faulty head unit, so they reached out to the dealership, who replaced the factory radio with a new unit.
Just as expected, similar issues where experienced on the new device as well, and after trying another Samsung phone running Android 10, the dealership staff decided to reach out to GM for more information (as a side note, Android Auto user Dwayne Weldon says the dealership also tried running Android with a Galaxy S8 running Android 10, but that’s no correct, as the S8 didn’t receive the latest version of the Google mobile operating system).
“The service manager contacted GM engineering and was told that there was an issue with the Android 10 OS and the Android Auto software and that there was nothing they (GM) could do about it. We even tried hooking my phone up to a completely different vehicle and got the exact same results. The service manager was able to successfully hook up his I-Phone to my vehicle, just for the record,” Weldon explains.
At the time of writing, there’s no known workaround to restore a broken Android Auto instance on an Android 10 device, but what could help is resetting the Android Auto and Google apps (delete cache and data) and eventually resetting the phone itself as well.
Google is yet to acknowledge the problem, so nobody knows for sure if a fix is coming or not.
