In what is perhaps the best advert or word of caution against Kia Sportage, one man from Denver is saying he’s had two identical SUVs stolen in as many months.
The Sportage, it would seem, is too hot for thieves to even try to resist taking it.
David Reiss, a junior at the University of Denver, tells CBS Denver that he’d just bought a used 2018 Kia Sportage in October, when it went missing from his apartment garage. Like most car owners, he was upset about it but eventually chalked it up to “these things do happen.”
At the same time, though, he liked the Sportage so much that he decided to buy another one like it, one month later. His replacement car was another used Sportage of the same model year, but Reiss only got to enjoy it five days or so. It too was stolen, this time from the garage of his office building.
“It’s so statistically unlikely you’re going to get your car stolen twice in one month,” Reiss tells the media outlet. “I think part of my mistake was buying the same car, I should have gotten a different one.”
After the experience, Reiss has decided that he will never buy a Sportage again. In fact, he’s not buying any car right now, choosing instead to drive a rental.
As Denver Police Commander Rick Kyle points out, Sportages are a hot commodity with thieves in Denver: 359 of them have been reported stolen this year alone. Mind you that the most active period for car thieves, the Christmas – New Year window, is just coming, so that number could increase drastically in the coming months.
Car theft in general has seen a rise in Denver and the U.S. as a whole. “There’s economic challenges going on right now and traditionally when there’s economic challenges, crime does go on the rise, also,” Commander Kyle explains.
