While we are against the idea of having a large car and not needing it, we are in no way against having a sufficiently large car to be safe. We are not only talking about crash safety, but also driving safety, as well.
A small city-oriented car will work great in town, but take it out of the city, and the usually high center of gravity, low width and small tires will soon make their presence felt, along with an acute lack of power.
The Daewoo Matiz is a perfect example of that. It is a Korean car (GM now owns Daewoo), which tries to mimic a Japanese kei car, and while it looks the same, it is very far behind the Japanese in terms of quality and quality of engineering. Taking a Matiz outside of town is not a very good idea, especially when the weather takes a turn for the worst, like in the video above, where a small-scale slide spells disaster.
The car was not traveling at high speed, nor was the driver doing anything unsafe, but the fact that the Matiz was not at home on the road made its mark. Any car, which is properly wide, would not have ended up on its side after a crash like this.
The moral? Keep your city cars in the city, unless they are properly engineered and adaptable.
