Smashing the window of an expensive car would normally land you in trouble, but one bystander got to do it legally, with help from the police, during a dog rescue mission in Essex, U.K.
The incident happened the other day, outside the Borough Hotel on Marine Parade in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, as the country was experiencing the biggest heatwave this year. The Daily Mail says the weather was “sweltering” but the outfits of bystanders would contradict that. Either way, the two female officers who responded the call deemed that the animal was in distress, so they had to intervene.
Video of the intervention was posted to social media as a means to warn other pet owners against leaving their animals behind in a locked car. It doesn’t matter if it’s a gorgeous BMW X5, like this one was: if it’s locked and doesn’t have AC, and the weather is warm, it’s enough to kill the poor thing.
The video shows one officer trying to break the passenger side window of the SUV with her baton. She realizes it’s not strong enough for the job and, to her luck, one bystander hands her a more suitable hammer. She tries that one, too, to little success, so she hands it back to the man, who breaks the window on his first hit.
The dog is rescued from the car in wild applause and cheers. In fact, the whole thing plays out like a giant spectacle for the gathered crowd, with yells of encouragement, applause, laughter and cheers. This would explain why some commenters’ reaction to it was something along the lines of, “yes, the poor dog needed help, but people sure love to watch windows being smashed, especially on expensive cars!”
That said, leaving a dog in a locked car can – and does occasionally – end in the animal’s death, especially in warm weather. The car acts like an oven that heats up rapidly, and it doesn’t even have to be parked in direct sunlight. Depending on location, civilians can break the windows of your car to rescue your pet and not face prosecution; the police can do so no matter in which country you’re from.
That’s one lesson that one BMW owner learned as well, while also inadvertently putting on a free show for a crowd of well-wishers.
