The world's largest gathering of smart cars took place this weekend in Lucerne, Switzerland. No less than 1,203 fortwos, Roadsters, Coupes and ForFours drove from Buochs to Seelisberg and back on Saturday, providing the Swiss locals with both the smallest and the largest traffic jam they have probably ever seen.
The Swiss location wasn't chosen by accident, since it's the country where one of the founding fathers of the tiny two-seater spent most of his life. As many of you know, the original smart idea was mutually developed in concept form in early 1990's by Mercedes-Benz and Nicholas G. Hayek, the creator of the Swatch watches brand.

This year's smart times provided to be quite a special event, with fans of the urban car brand having no less than three important reasons to celebrate. Launched in 1998, smart just had its 15th birthday as a car maker, while the ill-fated smart Roadster and Coupe celebrated the ten-year anniversary from their start of production.

The third reason for celebration was provided by the 1.5 millionth fortwo, which rolled off the production line just a few weeks ago. The car, an all-white smart fortwo electric drive model with red leather interior was bought by Auto, Motor und Sport. Instead of becoming their zero-emission urban company vehicle, AMS will sell it to the highest bidder, with the auction proceeds to be donated to a study project at the Munich Technical University for the “sustainable promotion of electric mobility on the African continent” (we are not making this up).
