With all the big names and big cars around the Mercedes-Benz stand in Frankfurt, it would have been easy to miss the little smart fortwo cabrio. And also a shame.
The miniature city-car from smart has always been one of the best means of motorized personal transportation around town. It's small, nimble, easy to park and quite useful at cheering you up when you need it with its perkiness.
Apart from this, the smart fortwo has always been a fun car to drive as well, no matter the environment. OK, maybe on highways with all those large trucks around is not the best place to find yourself in a smart fortwo, but that doesn't mean the car can't cope with it.
An open-top version of the car would only emphasize its traits and make it even more fun. It would enhance the connection with the outside world, which is the most often used argument against driving a car by people riding bikes or motorcycles. And it makes perfect sense.
The smart fortwo cabrio has an intelligent canvas roof that opens in two stages, making the smart go from a closed car to one with a very large sunroof and, finally, a full-bread convertible. The canvas roof is easily retracted by means of pushing a button, while the panels that need removing in order to turn the car into a true cabrio can easily be stowed away in the boot for quick access should the weather turn sour.
The smart fortwo is the kind of car that makes sense both rationally, and emotionally. The cabrio version does nothing to dent its practical credentials while significantly boosting its fun factor, so there's no way you can go wrong with it.
