smart fortwo +2 Four-Seater in the Works

What was only a rumor slowly tends to become reality as the smart brand aims to give a four-seater a try during these difficult market conditions. However, we're not talking about the forfour model produced by Mercedes' small brand between 2004 and 2006 but about a brand new car based on the current fortwo. The folks over at autoexpress.co.uk inform that the upcoming four-seater will become the strongest competitor for Audi's new A1.

Basically, only a little is known at this point but, according to the same source, smart plans to name the vehicle fortwo +2, clearly indicating that the model would be based on the current fortwo but offering room for four.

As you can see in the adjacent photo and published by the same source, the new smart would be pretty much the same with the new fortwo, sharing exactly the same look excepting the two rear doors. Engines will be mainly the same, while the wheelbase will be slightly modified to offer extra room for the rear passengers. However, given the fact that it is likely to arrive in 2012 or later, engine configurations will probably incorporate multiple fuel-saving features, such as start and stop plus an electric or hybrid unit.

First rumors hinting that smart might be looking to revamp the forfour model came out in early 2008 when smart Rainer Schmückle unveiled that the company is still considering its options when it comes to a new model. However, details are fairly unclear for the time being, so nobody can know for sure if smart really plans to launch a four-seater or continue with its successful fortwo range.
