smart CEO Confirms Upcoming fortwo and forfour Model Lineup

The upcoming third generation of the lilliputian smart fortwo will bring quite a lot of changes, among which we probably should also include an expansion of the smart model lineup, as the car will also spawn a forfour variant.

Made in cooperation with Renault, who will use the rear-engine/rear-wheel drive platform of the smart forfour on their future Twingo model, the new fortwo will be much more of a car than the current one, despite its overall length to remain the same.

What we know so far is that the upcoming third fortwo will be much wider than the current model, while the longer forfour will actually be shorter than its first generation.

Speaking with Mercedes Fans, smart CEO Dr. Annette Winkler confirmed that both upcoming models began development as early as 2010, when the Daimler-Renault-Nissan partnership was signed.

She also mentioned that the fortwo platform is 100 percent developed in-house, with Renault only contributing to shared costs and production capacities (the forfour will be built alongside the Renault Twingo in Slovenia, ed).

When asked about an electric version of the fortwo, Winkler said that both the fortwo coupe and the cabrio will be receiving an improved version of the current electric drive powertrain, but those will come at a later date.
