If the regular versions of the smart fortwo, fortwo cabrio or forfour haven’t got enough get-up-and-go for your liking, fret not. That little bit of oomph you’re looking for can be had in a Brabus-branded smart car, although it doesn’t come cheap.
In the United Kingdom, a market which loves the smart for the all the right reasons, the least expensive Brabus fortwo can be bought for £16,320 on-the-road. Those who want a little more than just creature comfort can go for the Brabus Xclusive fortwo (£19,490), which adds a handful of goodies.
If you’re the type of driver who likes to feel the wind in your hair and the sun smiling upon you, that will be £18,460 for the cheapest Brabus fortwo cabrio available. On the other end of the spectrum, those in the market for two extra doors and two additional seats have the Brabus forfour, which is priced from £16,815 in its most austere configuration. £625 on top of that adds what smart calls "night sky," also known as the optional fabric folding sunroof.
What’s common for the entire smart Brabus range is the engine. The turbo unit displaces 898 cc and prides itself on 109 PS (80 kW) and 170 Nm (125 lb-ft) of torque. It’s exactly the same engine as the 0.9 TCe in the Renault Twingo GT. But compared to the Frenchie, which comes as standard with a manual transmission, the smart Brabus range is matched with a six-speed dual-clutch unit. Weirdly enough, it features something called “Race Start.”
There’s only one option I’d tick from the list, save for the color. For £845, the Premium pack enhances whichever smart Brabus floats your boat the most with height adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel, heated and electrically operated door mirrors, 7.0-inch smart media system, as well as rear parking sensors, not that anyone needs those in a car as square as the smart is.
