Small GM Car Coming to India

India, the new land of opportunities for the car makers looking for a brighter future, is still managing to open new doors for western auto makers. GM, who is planning to become the king of kings in the region, is now considering a new small car for the local market.

According to Business Standard, the new car to be launched at a yet undisclosed date, is likely to be developed together with Chinese partner SAIC, will probably be slotted under the Spark, with the stated enemy being the Suzuki Alto.

“We are looking at having products strategically across segments to boost sales in the Indian market. We working closely with SAIC and looking at opportunities to introduce a product priced lower than the Spark in future,” Tim Lee, GM's president of international operations, was quoted as saying by Business Standard.

“India and the rest of the emerging markets are very important to us. The business model after the initial public offering is to focus on and leverage on these growth markets.”

The small car segment in India is still a major one on the local market, the Alto alone selling 32,000 units each month. With the new car to be introduced locally, GM is trying to keep to the 300,000 units target it set for itself to achieve in India by 2013.

In all, GM will roll out six new vehicles in India over the next two years. Of the six, four, including the one mentioned above, will be passenger cars, and only two commercial vehicles.
