Here’s something you don’t get to see very often: a slow-speed freeway pursuit that lasts for hours on end. Still, given the fact that we’re dealing with a “feisty” Chevrolet Malibu here, it’s probably understandable why the driver must have felt that a high-speed police chase was seemingly out of the equation.
According to NBC Los Angeles, a traffic stop took a bizarre turn of events on Tuesday night. The report claims a Chevrolet Malibu driver that was believed to be armed led the police on an erratic chase through parts of South Los Angeles before moving at very slow speeds (as far as pursuits are concerned, of course) across several Southern California freeways.
Oddly enough, the whole shenanigan started around 7 p.m. and lasted no fewer than six hours before the Chevy Malibu was finally stopped, and the suspect apprehended around 40 miles east of Los Angeles.
Surely enough, you’re not going to see slow-moving police chases that last that long, and social media users clearly raveled at the occasion, even taking jabs at the fact that news helicopters probably didn’t even last that long on account of their tanks getting empty in the process...
Apparently, everything had a logic. The pursuit kicked off because the driver reportedly carried a gun (none was found at the end of the chase, but it’s not like he didn’t have all the time in the world to toss it away) and police officers were reluctant to perform the traditional PIT maneuver on the Malibu after the driver was stopped in traffic, refused to get out of the car, and sped away.
The marathon chase did make the delight of the internet that night, as we are well aware that watching car chases is a cult tradition around the Los Angeles parts. We might even be tempted to assume the Chevy Malibu was so relentless for the sake of the fans.
Fortunately, no one was injured, and the suspect ended in the custody of law enforcement officers in a most spectacular way. We’re not sure if he was oblivious to just about every crime drama/comedy TV series out there, but the guy seemed intent on doing everything in his power to continue the saga, even after the trusty but slow Chevy Malibu gave up on him.
And it’s not even GM’s well-known reliability to blame here, as the police spiked the road. NBCLA managed to catch the exact moment when at least three of the tires decided to retire along with at least one of the wheel rims, as the Malibu grinded to a halt in a shower of sparks...

Finally, after more than six hours, the bizarre slow-speed pursuit comes to an end in Ontario, with the driver getting out of the vehicle. https://t.co/5gWWWF722h pic.twitter.com/Uh4bxDR1p1
