Ian Robertson, BMW Sales Chief talked with Autonews reporters Tuesday, after the annual BMW Annual Accounts Press Conference, held in Munich and he might've said more than he should have.
Amongst other interesting things, like the record year registered in 2012 and the forecast for 2013, Robertson said some other interesting facts. The one that caught our attention was a statement about the X3 sales.
The F25 BMW X3 sales increased by 27% in 2012, a figure way bigger than the expectations BMW had, especially after the harsh reviews the car received. Robertson's statement blames the production capacity of the Spartanburg plant for the 149,853 units sold, claiming that if the plant had a bigger capacity, at least 35,000 more X3s would've been sold last year.
"We need more capacity in Spartanburg not only for the upcoming X4 but also for the current X range. BMW could have sold another 35,000 units of the X3 last year if the plant had been able to build them," Robertson said.
This means that we could see an upgrade in production capacity for the South Carolina BMW plant as soon as this year, especially with the launch of the new X4 which will also be produced in the US.
