When it comes to driving, it’s the experience that could one day make the difference between life and death. This near-death incident that saw a skydiver from Lima, Peru, miraculously get away with a failed jump from the plane proves that the rules apply to any other situation. There may have been a guarding angel by his side, but the knife this man had in his pocket probably was what saved his life.
A video with a pro skydiver from Lima, Peru, has gone viral over the weekend and it proves that death can truly be tricked sometimes. The irony of this situation is that the problem did not concern the parachute, but the man’s jumpsuit. Fernando Gava was getting ready to free-fall out of a plane in Lima when his jumpsuit got caught on the exit step. According to his friend Maurice Mathey quoted by ABC News, it was his pants that caused the incident in the first place.
Maurice was the one who was filming the jump when the accident happened. He was obviously shocked by what could have happened to his friend. Luckily, after the plane continued to circle with Gava hanging 10,000 feet in the air for about 30 minutes, the man finally managed to cut his pant leg off from his jumpsuit and safely open his second parachute.
Experienced divers, apparently, are used to carrying a hook knife every time they jump, and fortunately so did Gava. Believe it or not, the skydiver came out of the incident with only a minor cut on his hand caused by the knife he used to free himself.
Here’s a big surprise. Despite the perception of danger, fatalities are rare in comparison to other reasons. Official numbers show that about 21 skydivers are confirmed killed each year in the US, which is roughly one death for every 150,000 jumps (about 0.0007%).
