It's been a while since the Skully AR-1 project kicked off on a crowdfunding basis, but the official launch of the final version has been delayed once more, for the fall of 2015. Skully CEO Marcus Weller set out on a trip to some of the biggest cities in the world to meet the backers and customers, explaining how things work at the present time.
Weller will give talks, demo the smartphone app and show the Skully AR-1 helmet in its current development stage in seven cities that include New York, Boston, London and Sydney. He declared that all the backers will receive their helmet by the end of the year, as shipping is expected to start this fall.

A smart helmet with an $1,500 price tag

Riders who feel like getting what is touted to be "the smartest helmet in the world" forked out $1,500 (€1,360) in advance to get their hands on a lid with HUD display, a rear view camera and extensive integration of digital technologies, such as GPS, music and more.

Weller said that the AR-1 will be manufactured in Silicon Valley in the Flextronics facility. However, some of the guys out there are rather concerned because they'd like to know who will be making the shells of the AR-1.

Most of the branded gear bike makers sell comes from renowned helmet manufacturers, and is therefore infused with the proven safety and reliability of the original product. From this perspective, Weller only added that the Skully AR-1 will receive an extra layer of carbon fiber. The matter definitely needs some more clarifications.

As to the smartphone app Skully demoed, it looks like those who attended the first meeting have not been exactly thrilled by it. The helmet itself was far more interesting, especially as people now knew the lid would be a little late. Stay tuned for more.
