Skroller, the e-Scooter Backrest That Promises to Bring Safety to Smart Mobility

Micromobility could be a solution to many traffic-related woes, including congestion and pollution. However, when it comes to e-scooters, no one puts safety as highly on the list as Spanish start-up Skroller.

A Skroller is not an e-scooter model, but a backrest that works with any e-scooter model. It’s like a seatbelt for smart mobility devices, which promises everything a seatbelt in a vehicle brings to the table: support and safety, but also control over the device, customization and durability.

Skroller is now fundraising on KickStarter and, should everything go according to plan, the first Skrollers will ship to backers in December this year. This little gadget / accessory promises to reinvent the experience of riding an electric scooter, from the way the body finds the center of balance and relieves muscle pain in the arms, to offering more control over the device and even allowing hands-free riding.

We’re not sure that last one on the list is advisable or entirely safe, but it’s a good thing to know it’s an option, at the very least.

Skroller is brilliant in its simplicity. You tie it on the e-scooter and then press the button to release the belt. Once you have found the length you’re most comfortable with, lock it into position and secure it with the secure lock. In case of an accident, Skroller ejects the lock and releases the band to prevent injuries. The belt comes with a cushion that protects your back and makes leaning against the Skroller comfortable.

Made with a stainless steel core, Skroller is lightweight and high-quality, and designed with an eye to detail. Should the fundraising campaign secure funding, it will come in a variety of color combinations.

Skroller swears by its product, which has been tested in the lab and out in the streets, by people from native Spain, Germany, Australia and Russia. It also says that riding an e-scooter fitted with this accessory just once is enough to make you never want to go back to riding without.

“Leaning back on Skroller enables you to steer with your center of balance providing a full sensation of comfort, stability and control over the motion,” Skroller says. “Skroller connects your body to the pole of the scooter activating it as an integral part of the center of balance. That’s right, you can now shift your weight to the sides while turning which makes the ride smoother and safer, feeling in control of each turn, even when hands free!”
