Skoda Teases the Camouflaged Looks of Its Upcoming "Made in India" Kushaq CUV

A couple of weeks ago, Skoda revealed the name of the first production model based on the MQB-A0-IN architecture, a vehicle specifically developed by the Czech automaker for the Indian market. Dubbed the Kushaq, this mid-size (according to Indian market classification, subcompact elsewhere) SUV will have its world premiere at its new “home” sometime during the first month of spring.

Set to officially arrive in March in India, the Kushaq has been teased a bit more extensively on this occasion, although we’re still dealing with a lot of camouflage.

The new representative of Skoda’s crossover family is said to mix the company’s well known “qualities with the preferences of Indian customers” and should impress them with “striking design, plenty of space, a great deal of comfort and high levels of safety as well as efficient TSI engines.”

Underpinned by the newly created MQB-A0-IN platform (which is an architecture derivative that’s adapted to the Indian market), the Kushaq is not only the first dedicated representative from Skoda for the Indian market; it’s also said to announce the future arrival of many VW Group models specifically tailored for the local market.

Specifically, Skoda has been deemed by the German conglomerate as the responsible business unit for the implementation of the “India 2.0” project, meaning the Czech manufacturer has complete oversight over activities in the Indian region.

The launch of our new Kushaq marks the beginning of a new era for Skoda on the Indian subcontinent. It’s the region where we oversee all Volkswagen Group activities within the scope of the India 2.0 project. The Kushaq marks the start of a model offensive consisting of four new mid-size Skoda and VW models,” explains Thomas Schäfer, Skoda’s CEO.

The company is looking for a piece of the pie in the region’s rapidly expanding midsize SUV segment, and the Kushaq will become Skoda’s third crossover model alongside the Kodiaq and Karoq. The MQB-A0-IN vehicle comes with a decent (2,651 mm/104.37 in) wheelbase, identical to the Kamiq, which should provide ample space for five persons and their luggage.

Skoda has already shared some of the specific details; for example, we know that depending on the trim level, the Kushaq will be available with LED headlights, DRLs, and even brake lights. Even more importantly, the company has already spilled the beans on the powertrain choices.

As such, the new SUV will be equipped with a couple of TSI engines, namely the well-known 1.0- and 1.5-liter versions. The Kushaq is a crossover through and through, as it will be offered exclusively with front-wheel drive, while transmission choices are a bit wider and include a six-speed manual, six-speed automatic, or a seven-speed dual clutch.
