Skoda Superb Combi SportLine Debuts in Frankfurt, First of Many "Emotional" Models

The Skoda Superb Combi, and Skoda Superb, in general, are well-known for the ridiculous amounts of space they offer in exchange for a not at all ridiculous price.

Obviously, this makes the Superb the model of choice for the rational customer, people who want to get the most bang for their buck, where "bang" stands for practicality. It was never regarded as a sporty car and you would think Skoda was OK with that.

This year in Frankfurt, however, the Czech manufacturer introduced the Skoda Superb Combi SportLine, a model said to "mark the dawn of a new era for Skoda."

The idea is that Skoda is no longer content to be "simply clever", and wants to appeal more to the emotional side. Not a bad idea in itself, but you have to wonder how will this shuffle things inside Volkswagen Group's portfolio of brands.

Regardless, the Skoda Superb Combi SportLine is here and that means Skoda is serious about going this path with its future models. The SportLine version is available for both Sedan and Combi body styles and comes with 18- or 19-inch black alloy wheels, additional black exterior design elements, tinted side and rear windows and a sports suspension lowered by 15 mm (0.7 inches).

On the inside, the SportLine brings exclusive sporty (doh) seats, aluminum pedals, and a leather sports steering wheel, "among many other features."

Since it's called "SportLine", this Skoda Superb needs some potent powertrains. Well, this is and isn't true, since Skoda was happy to only exclude the two base petrol and diesel versions, so you can have the SportLine starting with a 1.4 TSI engine with 150 hp or a similarly powered 2.0 TDI engine.

The current Skoda Superb has been with us since June this year, while the Combi version will be launched this month together with the SportLine trim level. But the real news here is that Skoda is changing its tune and wants to be more than just a very convenient a utility brand. And by the looks of it, it has every chance to succeed with this transformation.
