Skoda Scala Unveiled as Bold Understatement With Modern Compact Car Tech

We can't pretend that the Skoda Scala is a highly-anticipated model, but we predict it will have a huge impact. Based on what we've seen at the official unveiling, this will be among the Top 10 best selling cars in Europe.

The Scala is an indirect replacement for the Rapid. It's only available as a 5-door hatchback, a body style meant to directly rival the VW Golf. The model is almost 2 meters wide (1,988mm with mirrors), has a 2,649mm wheelbase and measures 4,362mm from bumper to bumper. At 467 liters, its trunk is easily the most spacious around, and at its widest point measures a full meter.

The design is better than the Rapid, clearly infused with Skoda DNA, but still very understated. The front end features the familiar angular headlights, hexagonal grille and power dome in the hood. Its stand-out features include standard LED headlights, clamshell hood and the rear glass extending over the trunk. From now on, all Skoda models are going to have that lettering at the back.

There's also something called the Emotion Package, with a panoramic glass roof and an elongated fifth-door window. Styling is subjective, but the only thing we truly hate is that large plastic diffuser at the back.

The interior is also quite bland, but it does debut new tablet infotainment on top of the dash, which at 9.2 inches (optional, standard is only 6.5in) is among the biggest in the class. Also, you can have a 10-inch digital dash, while phone pairing through Carplay and Android Auto can be done wirelessly. The Scala comes with wireless updates and a variety of apps.

A total of five engines will power this new platform along, all of them economical and unexciting. The base setup is a 95 HP 1.0 TSI with a 5-speed manual, followed by the 115 HP version of the same engine and the 150 HP 1.5 TSI, both available with a 7-speed DSG.

The only diesel option is going to be the 1.6 TDI with 115 HP while a 1.0 G-TEC capable of running on CNG will offer customers 90 HP and 145 Nm towards the end of 2019. An RS version is possible, considering the Scala was previewed by the Vision RS concept in Paris.
