The car you see in these first official photos is the brand new Rapid Spaceback, an affordable B+ class car from the Czech carmaker. Based on the same wheelbase architecture as the notchback sedan, the Spaceback has different C- and D-pillar.

The design of this car is pretty self-explanatory, so let's just focus on the tech side of things. The Spaceback is actually less roomy than the sedan. At 415 liters of cargo, it's got 135 liters less now. With the rear seats folded flat, this increases to a massive 1,380 liters, which is still down from the 1,490 liters of the sedan. Considering the VW Golf 7 has 380 liters of boot space, the Rapid hatchback is still very good.

The reason for this reduction is that the Spaceback measures 4483mm in length, making it 180mm shorter than the sedan.

Skoda didn't go too much into detail about the engine range, saying only that the car will be available with a choice of four petrol and two diesel units with outputs between 75 PS and 122 PS.

However, based on the sedan model we can tell you exactly what those engines are: 1.2 MPI 75 PS, 1.2 TSI 86 PS, 1.2 TSI 105 PS, 1.4 TSI 122 PS, 1.6 TDI 105 PS and a new 1.6 TDI with only 90 PS that belongs to the GreenLine model. This will reportedly consume 3.8 liters / 100 km (74.3 mpg UK) and put out 99 grams per km of CO2.

“The new ŠKODA Rapid Spaceback is a milestone for ŠKODA: it means that we are entering the strategically important segment of compact hatchback models,” says ŠKODA’s CEO Winfried Vahland. “The Rapid Spaceback is a great addition to this class in that it combines ŠKODA’s good practical characteristics with the popular hatchback shape. Sporting the new ŠKODA design, the Rapid Spaceback has a fresh, dynamic and individual appearance. It is a compact car with a sporty chic, spacious and practical, ideal for young people and families.”

The Rapid Spaceback will make its motor show debut in Frankfurt this September and will go on sale the month after that.
