Skoda Octavia RS 245 Revealed, Does 0 to 100 KM/H in 6.6 Seconds

After revealing a refresh for the two basic Octavia RS models, Skoda decided to grab the Golf GTI's new 245 PS engine and make its own hardcore car... cars, as there's a sedan and a wagon.

With the Mk2 generation that went out of production in 2012, the Octavia RS was clearly Volkswagen's dumber cousin. However, that's not the case anymore. Given the restraints of the larger Octavia body compared to the Golf, the Czechs really have done everything they could.

Thanks to a new, more powerful 2.0 TSI engine, the RS 245 can sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 6.6 seconds. The heavier Combi version takes 6.7 seconds, meanwhile. Both of them come with an electronic top speed limiter programmed to kick in at 155 mph (250 kph).

Not the fastest, but still quick

We want to buy into Skoda's marketing talk, saying that the RS 245 is the fastest car they've ever made. But the fact of the matter is the Superb has 280 horsepower and AWD so that it can make the 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 5.8 seconds. They should have just called it the most exciting Octavia ever, and we would have bought that.

So what's different between the RS 230 and the 245? Well, before the facelift, the Octavia had a 220 and a 230 model, but both had the same torque. However, this upgraded unit packs 370 Nm (273 lb-ft), representing a 20 Nm boost.

The 245 is going to be noticeably more expensive because it comes standard with an electronically regulated VAQ limited-slip differential. It should also pack a better sounding exhaust.

The press release talks about the RS 245 being 14mm lower than a regular Octavia and having a 38mm wider rear track. But that actually suggests it's the same as the RS 230.

But just like before, the wheels are a clear difference, as the 230 comes standard with 18s and this has a 19-inch design as standard. Admittedly, those are the same wheels as in 2015 and 2016. Also, I think they installed a black pack, which includes a black grille and black mirrors.

Expect to see the Octavia RS 245 on display in Geneva, together with the Kodiaq Scout and Sportline.

Editor's note: Dear Skoda, you forgot to make the trunk spoiler black again, just like last time. Just give me a free RS and we'll call it even!
