Back in 1996 when the first Skoda Octavia was put into production, nobody would have though that this would become a globally recognized product of the Czech manufacturing industry, sold in far-away places like China or even Australia.
And yet here we are, as Skoda's popular compact family car, now less compact than ever, is going on sale in Australia.

The official website states that the MSRP in Australia is $22,990 for the sedan model and with a 1.4-liter turbo engine, manual gearbox and Ambition trim. This is significantly cheaper than the outgoing model and is basically on par with the cheapest VW Golf in Australia.

Engine choices are limited to three turbocharged four-cylinder units. The cheapest is called 103TSI and is the 1.4-liter turbo producing 140 PS or 103 kW. It's fitted with cylinder deactivation and so returns 5.7 l/100km. A seven-speed DSG is also available. A larger 132TSI engine fitted to the AU-spec Octavia is a 1.8-liter TSI with 180 PS or 132 kW. It gets about the same fuel consumption but is much faster, reaching 100 km in 7.4 seconds.

Finally, there's the diesel called 110TDI. This is the 2.0 turbodiesel rated at 150 PS and 320 Nm of torque. It get 4.3 l/100km and takes 8.3 seconds to reach 100 km/h.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
