Together with the 1.5 TSI that Volkswagen just announced, the 1.0 TSI represents the future of the German company and its sister brands, Skoda, SEAT, and Audi. Even though the Octavia is a large car, it too has benefited from the turbocharged 3-cylinder unit.
As far as we can figure out, the Octavia is the first Skoda to receive a turbocharged 1-liter engine. However, there are other models with 3-cylinder force-induced powertrains, thanks to the recent introduction of the 1.4 TDI.
So what does this basic Octavia model sound like? Some people say it's a bit like a V6, but doesn't come across in this first video that we've received from Czech website Autoforum.
In fact, the 1.0 TSI has the trademark rattle of a direct injection system, which you can hear anywhere from the Golf GTI to the BMW X1... if you open the hood. Not surprisingly, there's a lot of room left under there, as the Octavia is designed to take anything up to a 2-liter.
Under hard acceleration, the 1.0-liter Octavia can reach 100 km/h in about 10 seconds. The engine has slightly more power and torque than the 1.2 TSI that it replaces. However, nobody is going to drive like this. What's really interesting is that the Czech magazine was able to take it all the way up to 200 km/h.
This generation of the Octavia dates back to March 2013 and measures 4.65 meters in length. Despite being 90mm longer than before, it's not heavier, thanks the MQB platform. The Octavia Combi, which was introduced in 2014, will also receive a 1.0 TSI engine later this year.
The 1.0 TSI engine was announced at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. Its first major application was when Volkswagen introduced the mid-life facelift for the Polo hatchback, followed by the Audi A1. Basic versions of the SEAT Ateca SUV have this engine and so do those of the premium Audi A3 model.
