The Skoda Kodiaq was revealed a day ago. And not surprisingly, there's already a Kodiaq RS rendering available.
Even though Skoda is one of the richest companies within the Volkswagen Group, selling a million cars a year or more, they aren't too keen to spend on things that won't sell in amazing numbers. So, for example, they won't offer a plug-in hybrid, at least not until 2020. They don't make any fancy Vision Gran Turismo concepts or plan to take over the premium segment like everybody these days.
The same goes for the RS performance brand. While BMW has an M or M Performance version of nearly every model, Skoda only makes the Octavia RS, after discontinuing the Fabia RS.
You might think that hot hatch performance doesn't match with the Kodiaq SUV, but in my opinion, that's not true. The same 2.0 TDI engine that's very popular on the Octavia RS can also be ordered on the regular model. It's the equipment and extras that make a difference - electronic diff, beautiful big wheels, black grille, bucket seats and trademark perforated leather steering wheel. NEVER, does any owner claim that his car is just as good as the Golf GTI, but it's always a lot more practical.
You could do that with the Kodiaq, right? The only real problem is that with a rough weight of 1.7 tons, the 184 PS output of the 2.0 TDI wouldn't be enough. But Skoda has access to very powerful and efficient 2.0 TSI petrol engines. We counted six of them. They range in output from 220 PS to 310 PS, and are a natural fit under the hood of any large MQB car.
The rendering for the Kodiaq RS must have been easy for X-Tomi to make. It's just a white version with the wheels and accents from the Octavia RS. But the overall effect kind of reminds of the BMW X3 and other such elegantly sporty off-roaders.
