Joined at the hip with the SEAT Ateca, the Skoda Karoq serves as a replacement for the long-running Yeti in the Czech automaker’s lineup of crossovers. In production since 2017 on the Volkswagen Group MQB modular platform, the Karoq now numbers more than 250,000 examples of the breed.
Described as “a compact all-rounder” by Skoda themselves, the nameplate enters the 2020 model year with “safety and comfort features that have yet again been improved.” The 250,000th Karoq rolled off the production line in Mladá Boleslav with the 1.0-liter TSI three-cylinder turbo (116 PS and 200 Nm of torque) as well as Black Magic paintwork for the exterior body panels.

It’s a modest specification when you think about it, and going through the German configurator for the Karoq, the same car would set you back the not-so-princely sum of 23,040 euros for the least-equipped trim level. If it were our money, a four-cylinder turbo and AWD would have been specified.

“This milestone is proof of how popular the Karoq is. The fact that it has just taken a little over two years after the start of production to exceed the mark of 250,000 cars manufactured is a huge success and underlines the importance of the Karoq in our attractive model range,” said Michael Oeljeklaus, the board member responsible for production and logistics at Skoda Auto.

Mid-July 2017 is when the Karoq started production in the Czech Republic at the Kvasiny plant, and in 2018, no fewer than 115,700 units were delivered to customers. So far in 2019, the Karoq has tallied 97,900 vehicles, ensuring the model’s commercial success in Europe.

In regard to what’s new for 2020, Side Assist has been added to the list of safety and driver-assist technologies. Side Assist warns the driver of vehicles in the blind spots up to 70 meters away. Skoda Connect is another highlight, and as far as handling is concerned, the Dynamic Chassis Control adaptive dampers are available for both front- and all-wheel-drive models.

Skoda has two other crossovers on sale in the Old Continent, namely the subcompact Kamiq and mid-sized Kodiaq with seating for seven.
