Skoda Kamiq Configurator Launched, Costs Just €600 More Than Scala Hatch

Skoda has launched the configurator for the all-new Kamiq in Germany. Even though it's the entry-level crossover, it features a lot of space for just €17,950, so we think there's very little reason to buy a Fabia unless you really want something small.
Indeed, the Fabia feels like Skoda's least-loved child right now, as it's only available with one engine, a 95 horsepower 1-liter with a 5-speed manual. The Kamiq gets that thing as well, followed by a 115 HP version that's available with DSG. Unfortunately, the step-up in power costs €1,200.

Your only other engine choice right now is a 115 HP 1.6 TDI, also fitted with either a 6-speed manual or a DSG. So the engine range is downright identical to a VW T-Roc. Considering this thing weighs 1.4 tons with the driver, we'd either get the diesel or wait for the 1.5 TSI to arrive later this year.

At 4.24 meters, the Kamiq is about 120mm shorter than the Scala hatchback, but still noticeably bigger than the 4.11m T-Cross. Its trunk space also lands between the two. We think they got almost everything right to make this successful, especially the amount of space available and the front-end design. But there's a variety of rivals, such as the stylish new Peugeot 2008 and Renault Captur.

This being a VW Group car, you get plenty of tempting options that you wish were fitted as standard. The basic Ambition model even has the audacity to feature steel wheels, while only the top-end Style has its roof rails painted. Even at €23,000, you don't get the digital dashboard, LED headlights or push-button start.

Even so, we found some reasonably priced options, like any Skoda should have. For just €80 the front seat folds flat to carry larger items, while dual USB ports and picnic tables for the back seats cost just €150.
