The system comprises of a Haldex all-wheel drivetrain with a DSG gearbox powered by a 2.0 liter TDI CR 140 hp engine. The option is available for the Superb, Octavia Estate and Octavia Scout, joining the Yeti in the line of Czech builder’s 4x4 lineup.
The system distributes power electrically, using a fourth-generation Heldex clutch. Normally, 96 percent of the total power is directed to the front, which is better for fuel efficiency. If road conditions change, electronic sensors will redirect power to the wheels that have enough traction. Skoda also say the 4x4 system ensures that towing caravans and trailers is much safer and easier.
Haldex systems are used on a number of Volkswagen AG cars, a well as Volvos. It is primarily designed as a non-permanent 4x4 for transverse-engined models. Its short reaction time (only a seventh of a wheel spin) relative to systems like a viscous coupling, makes it ideal for normal road cars that only need to go off-road from time to time.
Haldex AWD has been available on the Octavia for about 10 years but this is the first time it comes with a DSG gearbox. The package will be available in the Uk in November 2010 for the starting price of GBP21,705 ($30,894).
