Skoda Debuts 1.2l HTP Engine Production

Volkswagen's Group Czech manufacturer Skoda announced today it has begun production of a modernized 1.2l HTP engine, at the Mlada Boleslav facility. The new unit is actually a tweaked version of the company's 3 cylinder unit, aimed at, you guessed it, reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emission levels.

The adaptations made to the existing unit, including the optimisation of its weight, will smoothen its operation and reduce fuel consumption, emission and noise levels,” Eckhard Scholz, company's board member in charge with technological development.

The tweaks made to the engine include replacing the old link chain driving the valve timing mechanism with a cogged one. Additionally, the weight of the crankshaft has been reduced. The modifications were made to both existing versions of the engine, that is for both the two- and four-valve units.

As for the vehicles on which the revised engine will be featured on several Volkswagen Group vehicles. The unit will be fitted in the near future on Skoda vehicles (Fabia, Roomster), Volkswagens (Polo, Fox) and Seat (Ibiza, Cordoba).

The previous generation 1.2l HTP engine developed 60 hp or 70 hp and 108 Nm at 3,000 rpm. This allowed it to propel the vehicle sit is fitted on from naught to sixty in 15.1 seconds and reach a top speed of 96.9 mph (156 km/h). Fuel consumption figures stood at 39.8 mpg (5.9 L/100Km) combined cycle, while CO2 emissions were well into the 140 g/km range (figures for the 2008 Fabia Combi).

For now, the Czech manufacturer has not released the figures provided by the new version of the engine, or whether performance figures have remained the same.
