Skoda Advises Drivers to Check Their Cambelt

With the lack of care for the car displayed by the overwhelming majority of car owners, it's no wonder manufacturers themselves have to step in and advise their customers to perform certain checks which otherwise would have been done on a regular basis.

Aside from washing the car, changing the tires when the running surface become used or changing the car's fluids, Czech manufacturer Skoda warns there's another bad habit lurking around in the dark: failure to check the car's cambelt.

While some might not even now what a cambelt does (it provides the timing of the engine's components), Skoda warns that forgetting about it might hurt your pocket more than you might have thought. Because it's made of rubber, the cambelt is prone to wear and tear.

How you drive influences the way and degree in which the cambelt deteriorates more than anything. This is why Skoda advises car owners to change the cambelt at least once every four years, provided that the mileage limit hasn't been reached. Ignoring to change it may end up costing the owner as much as 5,000 pounds (in most cases, the damages made by a faulty cambelt require a new engine altogether).

“Although a cambelt change is a routine maintenance item, with time and mileage parameters, it doesn't form part of a scheduled service,”
said John Bower, Skoda UK head of Aftersales.

“Skoda customers who use their Skoda retailer for vehicle maintenance will be advised at the correct time or mileage that their cambelt needs replacing. If, however, a customer is maintaining their car outside the Skoda network they may not be getting this advice.”
