Yes, the first two GTI, the Mk I and Mk II, were spectacularly fun and offered decent value, but what came after was a disaster. But VW showed it still could handle the situation when it unveiled the turbocharged Mk V. Powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged engine which could produce 200 horsepower, the first Golf V GTI concept car was official presented in 2003 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. However, the first production model came one year later in September, being unveiled to the public at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris.
Yet the sixth version was only a slightly reengineered version with only 210 horsepower. It will soon have to do battle with the 280 horsepower Astra OPC, so we’re hoping VW does something radical with the seventh GTI incarnation.
