Single-Seater Polestar 1:1 Concept Car Runs Through One Kilowatt for Every Kilogram Ratio

Performance has become the norm in today’s fast-changing world regardless of the product we’re talking about, but this is particularly true in the automotive industry, where standards have been shifting lately towards not only high-performance but also electrification and sustainability.

And to testify to this change, people in the mobility industry have come up with a wide array of innovations designed for both city roads and race tracks. From the sea of contraptions popping up in the automotive industry, today we’ve picked the conceptual Polestar 1:1 to talk about.

Polestar 1:1 single-seater track car is an exciting concept vehicle created as an entry for the Annual Polestar Design Challenge by Jeroen Claus, the lead designer and co-founder of VoyagerCo.

Built with performance and the thrill of racing in mind, the conceptual vehicle is imagined with a minimalist design that’s lightweight and incredibly clean.

“Performance has been given a broader meaning,”
Claus says. “Mobility and car culture, in particular, is central to this monumental shift. For some, cars are the cause of much that is going wrong in this world. For others, however, cars stand for something more. It is the quest for the intangible, the thrill of all our senses aligning in one breathtaking moment.”

And that’s exactly why he created this concept - to envision the ultimate track car that allows drivers to fully immerse in the thrill of the ride.

If we look at the car’s design language and its silver-white body, we could say the 1:1 is a Polestar through and through. However, being a conceptualized car, it has to have some perks. Let’s start with the name, which hasn’t been chosen randomly. 1:1 is a hint of the car’s power-to-weight ratio formula. The power-to-weight ratio is the amount of power a car delivers relative to its weight.

Aiming to create a car able to deliver the ultimate driving experience, the designer envisioned it with a ratio of one kilowatt for every kilogram. To achieve this, the vehicle is made of flax fiber, an eco-friendly material that confers it durability and lightweightness.

Polestar 1:1 seats just one and runs on an electric power train. It promises to offer the driver such an immersive and thrilling experience that they’ll forget the car has a zero carbon footprint, which is actually the whole point of this concept.

Something you don’t see on every track car out there is the single-seater cockpit, which is situated on the left side of the car. At first, this odd placing is a bit disconcerting as it creates a visual imbalance, but if you think about it, it’s quite refreshing.

There is a black line all around that delimitates what would otherwise be the interiors if the conceptual Polestar had been designed to seat four. The designer makes no mention of this, but the unused space to the right of the driver might be storing battery cells, balancing things out between the two sides of the vehicle.

A four-point harness seatbelt system is meant to keep the driver safe at all times, but especially during adrenaline-filled racing sessions, while the yoke steering wheel is designed for better control on the track or the urban roads.

The designer went even further with his built and endowed it with features that make it similar to a living organism capable of responding to stimuli like external conditions, speed, and driving inputs. One such feature is the Active Aero surface made of flexible panels that help guide and shape the air while the car is moving and achieve a balance between aerodynamics and downforce.

Talking about the kind of immersive experience he wanted to pinpoint, Jeroen Claus says the Polestar 1:1 single-seater is designed to “bridge the gap between the physical and digital dimensions and [offer] an experience in which all senses of the driver are treated to an enormous experience.”
