Singapore GP Baptise Turns Following Contest

The three turns subject to the Singapore Grand Prix contest “It’s Your Turn” have finally received their designation ahead of the 2009 race. Formula One fans from around the world had the opportunity to submit their desired designations for Turns 1, 7 and 10 of the Singapore circuit thanks to the contest launched by the circuit organizers with the help of local newspaper Today.

So here are the final results, as reported by Today:

Turn 1 (first turn after the start/finish line) will be named Sheares. What led to this name was the Benjamin Sheares Bridge running over it. The aforementioned name was submitted by wedding card designer Arthur Lim, who motivated his choice by wanting to pay a tribute to Singapore’s second President Benjamin Sheares.

In addition to choosing this name, the jury – formed by TODAY Sports Editor Leonard Thomas, Singapore Motor Sports Association president Tan Teng Lip, STPB F1 project director Leong Yue Kheong, former racer Lee Chiu San, deputy chairman of Singapore GP Colin Syn and managing director of Performance Motors Simon Rock – awarded Lim with two grandstand tickets, a pit lane walk and a two-night stay at a trackside hotel during the Formula 1 2009 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

Turn 7 of the Singapore circuit will now be named as “Memorial”, “honoring the victims of the Second World War,” as submitted by winner Ngee Ann Polytechnic lecturer Chan Kwan Yew. This particular corner is known as the best place on the Marina Bay circuit to try an overtaking maneuver.

Finally, Turn 10 – the one the Singaporean jury spent the most time choosing for a proper name – was named “Singapore Sling”. The idea came from Foo Say Boon and was based on the combination of tricky corners - turns 10 thru 12 – in that section.

Unlike Lim, the other two winner – all from Singapore, by the way – were only awarded a pair of grandstand tickets and a pit lane walk for this year's Singapore Grand Prix.
